Monique first came to the attention of an adoring public with her performances in Starsky and Hutch and Soul Plane. She followed these appearances with a role in Bad News Bears where she played the appropriately named Lolita.

It was her role as the sexy student Cinnamon in the CBS series Still Standing that created her breakthrough moment that won her a fan following. Her YouTube rendition of Santa Baby proves the girl can sing as well.

Determined to create her own place in the Pantheon of famous black actresses like Halle Berry, Pam Grier and Angella Bassett, Monique Cooper is currently at work producing her own sitcom pilot scheduled for release in mid 2011.

During a recent interview, Monique stated “I like roles that let me be crazy. It’s exhilarating and liberating to be able to just let go, let it all hang out. And humor always has to be just around the corner.”

This year, Monique finds herself on her way to Europe to further her acting chops. “I’m frustrated to some degree by American TV and film. I won’t do reality shows and that seems to be the flavor de jour for TV here in America. I’m at the stage right now where I have to be careful about my next few roles in film. There’s been a tendency to type cast me as the sexy stripper and the best I can say about that is ‘been there, done that.’ Right now, I have some opportunities in Europe that aren’t available for me here at home and I’m looking forward to playing parts ranging from ingénue to intrigue. Plus I love Europe.”

Perhaps the most refreshing thing about Monique is her attitude. In this era of entitlement, where fame seemed to accompany homemade sex tapes or drunken party behavior or multiple driving under the influence convictions, Monique has proven herself to be a woman of integrity and honesty that is not often found.

That her strategy is a bold gamble is not in dispute, but if any black actress can make a name for herself in Europe, Monique Cooper is the wise bet. I for one am rooting for her.
